The World of Senses: Hearing - Sounds in the Ear (17/28)

It is only through the senses that we experience our environment and are able to react to it. The four-part interdisciplinary series "The World of the Senses" runs the gamut from the latest findings in brain research to art, history and education, from the first development of the senses in a baby to their deterioration in old age.

We can't close our ears, our sense of sound is active and receptive to acoustic sensations around the clock, even when we're sleeping. However, going through life with open ears is nonetheless not a matter of course in a time where our sense of sight seems to have taken over the supreme position in human perception. Our sense of sound is already active in the womb: from the 20th week of pregnancy onwards the foetal ears can register sounds and the unborn child can recognize its mother's voice. Once the baby is born it quickly recognizes the power of its own voice. Our sense of sound plays a crucial role in social interactions, because it is exactly calibrated to the frequency and rhythm of speech.
