Expedition to the bleeding Lake (12/28)

The Alat lake in Bavaria looks at first glance like a normal mountain lake. But beneath the surface a strange reddish cloud is concealed in the water. Treasure-seekers think that hoards of gold from the Nazi regime may be hidden in the lake. A scientific expedition from the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Stuttgart is trying to air the secrets of the Alat Lake.

Although they are all experienced divers, the first attempt to reach the bottom of the lake fails. The cloud is so dense that the explorers cannot even see their own hands. Above the cloud the lake is a perfectly normal mountain lake. Sensitive living creatures in the water, such as the larvae of the caddis fly, show the scientists that the lake here is clean and rich in oxygen. A further diving expedition brings the first results: a two to three-metre thick layer of sulphur-processing bacteria hangs in the water. Beneath it the lake is dead. The scientists search for the cause of this strange bacteria cloud - and gain some amazing insights.

Schatzsucher vermuten Goldvorräte des NS-Regimes im See. Eine wissenschaftliche Expedition der Humboldt-Universität Berlin und der Universität Stuttgart soll die Geheimnisse im Alatsee lüften.

Obwohl alle erfahrene Taucher sind, scheitert ein erster Versuch zum Grund des Sees zu gelangen. Die Wolke ist so dicht, dass die Forscher nicht einmal mehr ihre eigenen Hände sehen können. Oberhalb der Wolke ist der See ein ganz normaler Bergsee. Empfindliche Lebewesen im Wasser, wie die Larven der Köcherfliege, zeigen den Wissenschaftlern, dass der See hier sauerstoffreich und sauber ist. Ein weiterer Tauchgang bringt erste Erkenntnisse: Eine zwei bis drei Meter dicke Schicht aus Schwefel verarbeitenden Bakterien hängt im Wasser. Darunter ist der See tot. Die Forscher machen sich auf die Suche nach der Ursache für die seltsame Bakterienwolke - mit erstaunlichen Erkenntnissen.
